We set off in good time for the day we had been waiting for since before the summer of 2014 when we first planned to be here.
First of all, Mike drove us to Lock 3 on the Welland Canal.
This canal was constructed so that ships could overcome the Niagara escarpment and sail from the Atlantic Ocean via the St. Lawrence Seaway and through the Great Lakes as far as the distant end of Lake Superior.
Traffic can only use the canal for a defined time of the year as the lakes are frozen in the depths of winter.
We headed for Lock 3 on the canal just as a small tug - the Misner - was passing through the lock.
