Skagway

On Saturday our port stop was at Skagway, potentially one of the most exciting stops on our cruise as this was a chance to be near the site of the Klondike Gold Rush, the White Horse Pass and Yukon Route and the White Horse Pass and Yukon Route Railroad.

We were due to dock at 6am, but didn't actually arrive until near 0730 and it seemed to take an age for the crew to get the gangway in place so that we could get off.  Because we were due to dock very early, Mike had booked the 8am train as he feared that the 9am and later trains would be rammed with passengers.

Elizabeth was first off the ship and we raced to the station. We arrived in good time as it turned out as the station wasn't as far away as we had feared.  We were told that the train would fill up at the quayside where both a Princess and a Holland America ship were berthed and we feared the worst.

But then our guide explained that we would be allocated carriages and that we were not allowed to change carriages after that. And so it was that the cruise dock passengers were crammed in to the rear carriages whereas we were thinly spread on our two carriages!

And we were on our way, retracing by rail the tough route that those early prospectors took in search of fortune.
